WHO GOES THERE written and performed by Tara Hugo
WHO GOES THERE directed by Peter Francis James opened the 2021 United Solo Festival in New York and was awarded Best One Woman Show. The late Ted Baker was the pianist, Liam Bellman Sharp sound designer, Kevin Lee Allen lighting, Kathleen McDonaugh costumes, Chris Griswold stage manager. A concert of song and spoken word told through stories, drama, comedy, and music. "My own journey started in Texas, having come to the world as a descendant of abolitionists, slave owners, preachers, unwed catholic mothers, and a Jewish immigrant killed by the outlaw 'Black Jack' in New Mexico." Liberals, artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, evangelists, addicts, conspiracists: a divided family, in a divided country, Hugo traces the divide. Women reject tradition, Christians marry Jews, whites marry blacks. Those who reinvented themselves joined the dance of diversity but were often disowned or at best, tolerated. Culled from the writings of her ancestors, among them, a Yankee soldier called the Missouri Poet Laureate, whose 1863 letter to his daughter reads, "...sing my poem...". 158 years later — Tara sings it. .... Insightful stories and songs infused with a wonderful sense of humor and steeped in love. Her first solo performance at age 7, 'I'm An Old Cowhand - her last, Philip Glass's "Infinity". Fred Glick and Donna Bryson sponsored the transfer to Denver, Colorado spring 2022. David Pearl, pianist. Annie Aqua, violinist. Sold out houses included 25 family members from Montana, Texas, Colorado and New York.
